David Koppenhaver Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education at Appalachian State University.
Long interested in the struggles of some children in learning to read and write, he co-founded the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with Dr. David E. Yoder in 1990, and directed its activities for eight years.
He has been a Distinguished Lecturer in the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and a Fulbright Scholar in the Schonell Special Education Centre at the University of Queensland in Australia.
His current research projects include studies of early communication and literacy learning in students with significant cognitive disabilities, reading profiles of children with Williams syndrome, and shared storybook reading interventions with core vocabulary for children with multiple disabilities.
His most recent book, co-authored with Karen Erickson, is entitled Comprehensive Literacy for All: Teaching Children with Significant Disabilities to Read and Write.
