About this Talk
There are many adults with disability who have not had access to AAC, or who’ve not yet had success with AAC and currently have limited means to communicate. Many families have either given up on communication support or are not aware of developments in practice and that communication and engagement is even possible. This can be a challenging group of people to engage with because of previous experiences of disempowerment and low expectations which may have damaged their self-esteem and belief.
In this presentation, Jaquie will share experiences and insights from facilitating a peer group of people with a range of complex disabilities engaging with AAC as adults. This group, ‘Merger of Minds’ has been hosted and lead by Eli, Jaquie’s son, who has CCN (complex communication needs) and uses AAC. She will talk about the challenges of engagement and how the group navigated these, as well as the adjustments and approaches which have resulted in a high level of engagement and significantly positive life outcomes for this group of adults and their families.
