Getting Started with No-Tech and Soft-Tech AAC
A Talk by Susan Norwell (Co-Founder, Rett University)
About this Talk
Given that communication is the primary need of an individual with Rett Syndrome, we had better strive to get it right, or as right as we can. Research points a huge spotlight on the need for modelling of communication, but families and professionals are often stymied as to what that means. Often the use of no-tech and soft-tech platforms are ignored or leapt over in the search for a high-tech device. Rather, we should view communication as a total package and acknowledge the value of all forms of communication.
This presentation is designed to give participants the what, why and how of introducing communication to a beginning communicator whether they are a youngster first diagnosed or an older individual with Rett who was misdiagnosed for years or did not have the same advantages our younger kiddos have today. “No-tech” and “Soft-tech” options will be modelled through the use of extensive videos with individuals with Rett of all ages across a framework of the “Big Three” avenues for building communication: everyday experiences, play and interaction, and literacy-based activities.
