Introducing High-Tech – We Have the Device, Now What?
A Talk by Susan Norwell (Co-Founder, Rett University)
About this Talk
Given that communication is the primary need of an individual with Rett Syndrome, we had better strive to get it right, or as right as we can. Research points a huge spotlight on the need for modelling of communication, but families and professionals are often stymied as to what that means specifically. Compound that uncertainty with the addition of a high-tech communication device and it is no wonder families and professionals that were so eager to get the device are nervous to get started.
This presentation is designed to give participants some basics as to how to introduce a high-tech communication device to younger and older individuals with Rett Syndrome. Often those who have worked with “littlies” that are eager to jump into a device are puzzled when working with teens or adults who are a little later to come to the communication arena. High-tech options will be modelled through the use of extensive videos with individuals with Rett of all ages across a framework of the “Big Three” avenues for building communication: everyday experiences, play/interaction, and literacy-based activities. The concepts of building meaning as a modeller of language and assigning meaning to beginning attempts will be emphasised in this talk.
This presentation is 120 minutes.
