About this Talk

Comprehensive literacy instruction (Erickson and Koppenhaver, 2020) recognises that a range of literacy activities are needed to ensure that all students progress as literacy learners. This is true of all literacy learners, including individuals with Rett syndrome.

Emergent literacy learners require a set of literacy activities to help them become conventional literacy learners.

These are: Shared reading, Writing (including Writing by myself, Writing with others, Writing from others), Self-selected reading, and Working with letters and sounds.

Conventional literacy learners also require a range of literacy activities to develop their literacy skills and read and write with comprehension at one level higher. These are: Comprehension instruction (Anchor, Read, Apply), Writing, Self-selected (independent) reading, and Working with words.

This presentation will provide introductory information on how to implement comprehensive literacy instruction, with both emergent and conventional literacy learners – and how AAC should be incorporated in these activities.

This presentation is 105 minutes.
